  • BJJ and Strength Training

Something many people don’t know about me is that my first college degree was in Exercise Science. That is the study of how exercise and fitness affect the human body and how to optimize those activities for a good life experience. As such, I receive and field many questions about exercise and BJJ. Often times you’ll hear a coach say, “You don’t need anything else, just do more jiu-jitsu if you want to get good.” But is that the whole truth? I brought in owner of Black Metal Strength Training and Strength Coach, Andrew Lewis as a guest on our recent podcast. Give it a watch and tell us what you think! ....

  • 8 Things I Learned AFTER Black Belt

    There’s less pressure:
Once you earn a black belt, there are no promotions, no ranks, not more colors for a very long time. This takes alot of pressure off your back. Even though we like to say, “rank isn’t important,” the simple fact is we are very proud of our ranks and usually want to earn the next one. So much training time and effort go into earning the black belt over 10 years that it’s a big relief when the goal is reached. Now you can just go train jiu-jitsu and keep getting better. Rank isn’t important:
While I’m extremely proud of the accomplishment, it’s even more obvious than ever that the rank isn’t important; the ....

  • Staying Motivates: 5 Tips

At the time of writing this, I have trained martial arts for 33 years. That is to say, I started in 1984 at the age of 5 and have trained regularly in one art or another since that time. It’s only an estimate; but in that time I have seen hundreds of people start their martial arts journey and quit before gaining real skill. This begs the question, how do you stay motivated enough to continue the journey and earn a black belt or even master the art? The tips presented below are just things I have noticed and begun to understand, especially since opening my own academy in 2010. I have been on the flipside of losing students. Whenever anyone quits or disappears, I make every effort ....

  • Showing Up: Is It Really the Key?

Stick around Jiu-Jitsu long enough and you’ll eventually hear the quote, “Show up! That’s the key to getting better at Jiu-Jitsu. Just more Jiu-Jitsu.” Not too long ago, however, a jiu-jitsu friend of mine wrote me a PM and said, “Hey Bill , just curious, is showing up really the hardest part. People always say that. Consistency is the key but I tell you, sometimes I wonder if I will ever get better or past this.”
Though he’s not a student at my academy, I know this man trains an awful lot. He really loves jiu-jitsu and, clearly, was very frustrated at the time of writing this to me. I would argue that many who feel the same as him would have ....
